Hi everyone,

Today, we recognize World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the measures that can be taken to save lives from suicide. Global Estimates: Close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds.

Recognizing Signs:

  • Talk of Suicide: Expressing a desire to die or talking about feeling trapped.
  • Change in Behavior: Drastic changes in behavior, mood, or appearance.
  • Isolation: Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities.
  • Feeling Hopeless: Talking about feeling no reason to live or feeling burdensome.
  • Increased Substance Use: Turning to alcohol or drugs more frequently.
  • Risk-taking: Engaging in reckless behavior or showing increased agitation.

How to Help:

  • Open Dialogue: Ask directly about suicidal thoughts. Be open and non-judgmental.
  • Listen Actively: Let them express their feelings. Avoid offering solutions; instead, provide a supportive presence.
  • Stay Calm: Panicking can make the situation more stressful for the person.
  • Seek Help: Encourage them to reach out to a mental health professional or helpline.
  • Stay Connected: Regularly check in on them, even if they seem better.
  • Limit Access: Ensure they don't have access to means of self-harm or suicide, like firearms or certain medications.

Dos and Don'ts:

  • Do be patient and attentive.
  • Do encourage them to talk.
  • Don't offer cliches like "It will get better" or "You have so much to live for" or "It could be worse".
  • Don't argue with them or challenge them with statements like "You're not serious".
  • Don't promise confidentiality. If someone's life is at risk, it's important to get professional help.
  • Do trust your instincts. If you believe the danger is immediate, call emergency services.

It's essential to approach someone you're concerned about with compassion and understanding. Your support can make a difference, but always involve professionals when necessary.

We encourage everyone to participate in our activities today. Firstly, we will have a virtual "Lunch and Learn" session with a mental health professional. This is an opportunity to learn about suicide prevention and mental health. Secondly, we will be creating a digital "Wall of Hope" where everyone can share positive messages, quotes, or personal stories.

These activities are designed to be accessible and inclusive, regardless of your location. Let's come together to support each other and promote mental health awareness.

Thank you,

People Team
