How to encourage an employee to use their PTO

Ensuring your employees utilize their Paid Time Off (PTO) is critical to both employee well-being and productivity. An employee's PTO is also a part of their compensation package, which should be utilized.

Support your team in taking time off by taking the following steps:

  • Encourage leadership to openly discuss their vacations or time off and encourage others to use PTO.
  • Remove barriers to alleviate concerns about workload while an employee is out. Create a company-wide plan to accommodate PTO by creating coverage plans for out-of-office employees or increasing flexibility on responsibilities. 
  • Remain flexible on re-entry. Employees returning may need a few days to catch up on emails and task completion. 
  • Regularly mention vacation and leave policies during meetings to motivate employees to book time off throughout the year and create a culture where discussion around holidays is positive.
