Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that commemorates the military personnel who died in the service of their country. It is observed on the last Monday of May. The holiday was first observed on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the American Civil War. By World War I, it had become known as Memorial Day.
The origins of Memorial Day are varied and disputed. Some believe that it was conceived in 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, as a day to decorate the graves of Union soldiers with flowers. Others claim that it originated in Columbus, Mississippi, when local women decorated the graves of Confederate soldiers who had died in battle there.
In any case, Memorial Day was not officially recognized by the federal government until after World War II, and it was not made a national holiday until 1971. Today, Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials, holding family gatherings and parades, and flying the American flag at half-staff.
Beyond offering employees PTO for Memorial Day, you can observe the holiday as a team by learning about the history of the holiday, reflecting together, and sharing stories of heroism and honor. Your team may want to volunteer or donate to organizations that support the families of fallen soldiers.
