Hi {{first_name}},

Providing feedback to employees, peers, and even upper management is going to be a critical part of your role as a manager here at {{company}}. It's important you effectively give and take constructive criticism and communicate clearly with your team.

As part of your manager training, we will dig into how to give your team feedback whether positive or negative.

  • Start with a win - always kick off feedback with a positive. Make sure it is recent, relevant, and sincere.
  • Focus on growth - even negative feedback presents a lesson to learn or opportunity for growth that may be invaluable for employees.
  • Discuss solutions - discuss ways to improve outcomes rather than 'tell' employees what they should be doing differently.

Be open to receive feedback as well. Make the process of 360 feedback a regular part of your communication cycle with your team. Invite feedback at group and 1:1 meetings, reviews, and stay interviews. Most importantly, ensure your team members know your door is always open.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm always willing to receive your feedback as well.

Thank you,

People Team

How to give feedback to direct reports

Providing feedback is a skill that has to be honed by managers. The way you give feedback determines heavily how it will be received by others and how you could be perceived as a leader. For this reason, it's essential that managers, team leaders, and employees be coached on how to give and receive feedback appropriately and productively in the workplace.

One of the best ways to encourage employees to receive and apply feedback or provide valuable 360 feedback is for managers to model how to give feedback in reviews, 1:1s, meetings, and even day-to-day interactions. Feedback should be constructive and delivered in a manner that encourages curiosity, growth, and pride as employees work toward improvements.

A great way to get off on the right foot when giving feedback is to start with a win. Then, raise awareness of a challenge or area for improvement that's become evident. Finally, suggestions can be made if there is an objective correction (such as using a tool correctly), but, ultimately, a discussion should be held to land on a goal or solution that works for the employee, specific circumstances, and manager or team.
