How to recognize Veterans Day at the workplace

Veterans Day is an annual holiday in the United States observed on November 11. It honors military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal government offices are closed. Many state and local government offices are also closed. The day is also a general holiday in various other countries.

The day was originally called Armistice Day, because it commemorated the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, on November 11, 1918, which effectively ended World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first national Armistice Day. In 1938, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day to include all American veterans who had served in any war.

This is an important holiday to acknowledge your team members who serve or have served in the Armed Forces. Be sure to thank veterans on your team. Many team members may be military spouses/partners or they may have family who are veterans or active service members. They are likely to be proud to share stories about their loved ones. Give everyone an opportunity to share their experiences and feel appreciated for their service.
