International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated on June 23rd each year to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women in the field of engineering. This day was established in 2014 by the Women's Engineering Society to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in engineering and to encourage more women to pursue careers in this field.
In 1876, the first woman received a degree in civil engineering. Elizabeth Bragg graduated from the University of Berkeley. But it wasn’t until 1919 that The Women's Engineering Society was established. It was formed to support informally-trained female engineers after the First World War.
Since then, women have gone on to invent many every-day tools and resources we take for granted such as the dishwasher (Josephine Cochran), paper bags (Margaret Knight), windshield wipers (Mary Anderson), rear view mirrors (Dorothy Levitt), the Clarke calculator (Edith Clarke), and even the advent of wireless communication as we know it today (Hedy Lamarr).
Observing International Women in Engineering Day in the workplace is important to recognize the contributions of women in the field of engineering, and to encourage more women to pursue careers in this field. Here are some tips for how to celebrate this day in the workplace:
Many industries are still male-dominated, so it's important that we uplift, recognize, and celebrate the women who are breaking glass ceilings and trailblazing the way for other women and making workplaces more equal and inclusive.
