Celebrating Filipino-American History Month

Hi everyone,

We are thrilled to announce that we will be celebrating Filipino-American History Month in October. October was officially declared as Filipino American History Month by the U.S. Congress in 2009, to celebrate the contributions of Filipino Americans to American society. This observance provides an excellent opportunity for us to honor the significant contributions, rich culture, and heritage of our Filipino-American colleagues.

  • First Asian Americans: Filipinos were among the first Asians to arrive in the United States. The first documented arrival was in October 1587, when Filipinos landed in what is now Morro Bay, California.
  • Healthcare Contributions: Filipino Americans make up a significant proportion of healthcare professionals in the U.S., especially nurses. They have been frontline heroes during various health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Musical Impact: Filipino Americans have made strides in the music industry. Apple de Ap, a member of The Black Eyed Peas, and Bruno Mars, a multi-Grammy Award-winning artist, are both of Filipino descent.

To make this celebration truly special, we have planned a cultural luncheon that will take place on [Date] from [Time].

Sample mouthwatering dishes such as adobo, pancit, and halo-halo, and experience the unique flavors that make Filipino food so special. Please RSVP by [DATE] so we can be sure to provide enough food for everyone who wishes to participate. And let us know if you have any food allergies or intolerances so dishes can be clearly and safely labeled.

We look forward to seeing you at this exciting event. Let us come together to honor and celebrate the rich heritage of our Filipino-American communities and colleagues!

Thank you,

How to celebrate Filipino-American History Month at work

October is a special month for celebrating the rich history, culture, and contributions of Filipino-Americans. Known as Filipino-American History Month, this observance provides a fantastic opportunity for workplaces to embrace diversity, foster inclusivity, and honor the Filipino-American community.

The History and Significance of Filipino-American History Month:

Filipino-American History Month dates back to October 1587 when the first recorded presence of Filipinos in what is now the United States occurred in Morro Bay, California. This month-long celebration recognizes the invaluable contributions and achievements of Filipino-Americans throughout history. From farmworkers and labor leaders to artists, athletes, and community advocates, Filipino-Americans have played a vital role in shaping the fabric of American society.

Tips for Celebrating in the Workplace:

  1. Education and Awareness: Encourage learning about Filipino-American history, culture, and traditions. Organize workshops, lunch-and-learn sessions, or invite guest speakers to share their experiences and knowledge. This will promote cultural understanding and appreciation among employees.
  2. Highlight Filipino-American Employees: Recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Filipino-American employees within your organization. Feature their stories, accomplishments, and experiences through internal communications, newsletters, or social media platforms. This will create a sense of pride and value for their heritage.
  3. Cultural Showcases: Organize cultural events or showcases where employees can experience Filipino customs, traditions, and cuisine. This may include dance performances, art exhibits, traditional clothing displays, or Filipino food tastings. Collaborate with local Filipino organizations or community members to make these events authentic and meaningful.
  4. Volunteer and Community Engagement: Encourage employees to participate in community service activities that support Filipino-American causes or organizations. This could involve volunteering at local cultural festivals, participating in fundraisers, or supporting Filipino-American heritage preservation initiatives.
  5. Employee Resource Groups: Consider establishing or supporting Filipino-American employee resource groups within your organization. These groups can provide a platform for networking, mentorship, and professional development, while also fostering a sense of belonging and cultural pride.
