Disability Pride Month: Celebrating Strength, Ability, and Inclusion
Copy Text

Hi everyone,

July is Disability Pride Month, marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. It’s a moment to recognize the history of disability rights and celebrate the identity, visibility, and pride of disabled people.

Disability is more common—and more diverse—than many people realize. It can be visible or non-visible, temporary or permanent, related to physical, sensory, cognitive, mental health, or chronic health conditions.

According to the CDCover 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. has some type of disability. This month, we encourage everyone to learn, reflect, and rethink. Because disability is a part of every community and chances are, it’s a part of your team too.

Hey everyone 👋

July is Disability Pride Month, and it’s more than a date on the calendar—it’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and visibility for disabled folks. This month also marks the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a major milestone in civil rights history.

Disability isn’t one-size-fits-all. It can be visible or non-visible, permanent or temporary, and connected to physical, mental, sensory, or chronic conditions. Chances are, it’s part of your world—even your team—whether you know it or not.

Over 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. lives with a disability, according to the CDC. So this month, let’s pause to reflect, listen, and challenge our assumptions.

How to celebrate Disability Pride Month at work

Disability Pride Month is about dismantling stereotypes, removing barriers, and challenging perceptions.

Few tips on fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace during Disability Pride Month in your workplace:

  1. Promote a Culture of Respect and Inclusion: The company culture should value diversity and inclusion in all its forms, recognizing the unique perspectives that people with disabilities can bring. Simply acknowledging and celebrating events like Disability Pride Month can promote this culture!
  2. Provide Reasonable Accommodations: Comply with the ADA by providing necessary accommodations to employees with disabilities, like modifying work schedules, altering workspace layouts, or offering additional training. Consider everyone's different learning styles as well. Some individuals may be able to learn better through videos while others might need content in written form.
  3. Promote Accessible Physical and Digital Environments: This includes implementing wheelchair-friendly facilities, using proper signage, and maintaining accessible software and websites.
  4. Implement Disability Education and Training: Offer disability education and training to eliminate misconceptions and biases, and to foster an understanding, respectful, and inclusive culture.
  5. Inclusive Benefits and Policies: Review your policies, benefits, and programs to address the needs of all employees, including those with disabilities.
  6. Create Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): A Disability ERG can be invaluable in creating a more inclusive workplace.
