Disability Pride Month: Celebrating Strength, Ability, and Inclusion
Copy Text

Hi everyone,

Disability Pride Month is about dismantling stereotypes, removing barriers, and challenging perceptions. Disability Pride Month dates back to 1990, which marked the first Disability Pride Day in Boston and coincided with the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

There are many types of disabilities. Some of them include:

  • Physical Disabilities - e.g. spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputations
  • Sensory Disabilities - e.g. blindness, low vision, deafness, impaired hearing
  • Intellectual Disabilities - e.g. down syndrome
  • Developmental Disabilities - e.g. Autism and ADHD
  • Psychiatric Disabilities - e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar, PTSD
  • Communication Disabilities - e.g. aphasia, stuttering
  • Neurological Disabilities - e.g. epilepsy, Parkinson's disease

Few important notes:

  • Some disabilities are not immediately apparent but equally significant. e.g. cognitive impairments, mental health disorders, diabetes, chronic pain, sight/hearing impairments.
  • Instead of referring to individuals as "disabled," it is more respectful and appropriate to use person-first language e.g. "person with a disability."

Throughout July, we will be organizing activities to recognize Disability Pride Month. We encourage each of you to participate, learn more about the experiences of people with disabilities, and consider how we can continue to foster inclusivity and accessibility in our workplace!

Thank you,

Hey everyone 👋

Disability Pride Month stands for breaking stereotypes 🚫, eliminating barriers 🚧, and challenging misconceptions 👀. Established in 1990, Disability Pride Month originated with the first Disability Pride Day in Boston, aligning with the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Disabilities come in various formsThey include:

  1. 🦾 Physical Disabilities - e.g. spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputations
  2. 👀 Sensory Disabilities - e.g. blindness, low vision, deafness, impaired hearing
  3. 🧠 Intellectual Disabilities - e.g. down syndrome
  4. 🧩 Developmental Disabilities - e.g., Autism and ADHD
  5. 💭 Psychiatric Disabilities - e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar, PTSD
  6. 💬 Communication Disabilities - e.g. aphasia, stuttering
  7. ⚡ Neurological Disabilities - e.g. epilepsy, Parkinson's disease

Important:

  • 🕵️‍♀️ Some disabilities, like mental health disorders, diabetes, chronic pain, and sight/hearing impairments, are not immediately visible but are equally significant.
  • 🤝 Respectful communication involves prioritizing personhood over a condition or disability. Instead of "disabled," we encourage the use of person-first language e.g. "person with a disability."

This July 🗓️, we have planned activities to observe Disability Pride Month. We urge everyone to participate 👥, deepen your understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities, and reflect on how we can foster a more inclusive and accessible workplace 🏢!

Thank you 🙏

Hi all,

Disability Pride Month stands for breaking stereotypes, eliminating barriers, and challenging misconceptions. It's a shift from viewing disability to recognizing ability, and from seeing weakness to acknowledging strength.

Established in 1990, Disability Pride Month originated with the first Disability Pride Day in Boston, coinciding with the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This July, we have planned activities to observe Disability Pride Month. We urge everyone to participate, deepen our understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities, and reflect together on how we can foster a more inclusive and accessible workplace!

How to celebrate Disability Pride Month at work

Disability Pride Month is about dismantling stereotypes, removing barriers, and challenging perceptions.

Few tips on fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace during Disability Pride Month in your workplace:

  1. Promote a Culture of Respect and Inclusion: The company culture should value diversity and inclusion in all its forms, recognizing the unique perspectives that people with disabilities can bring. Simply acknowledging and celebrating events like Disability Pride Month can promote this culture!
  2. Provide Reasonable Accommodations: Comply with the ADA by providing necessary accommodations to employees with disabilities, like modifying work schedules, altering workspace layouts, or offering additional training. Consider everyone's different learning styles as well. Some individuals may be able to learn better through videos while others might need content in written form.
  3. Promote Accessible Physical and Digital Environments: This includes implementing wheelchair-friendly facilities, using proper signage, and maintaining accessible software and websites.
  4. Implement Disability Education and Training: Offer disability education and training to eliminate misconceptions and biases, and to foster an understanding, respectful, and inclusive culture.
  5. Inclusive Benefits and Policies: Review your policies, benefits, and programs to address the needs of all employees, including those with disabilities.
  6. Create Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): A Disability ERG can be invaluable in creating a more inclusive workplace.
