Important notice in observance of Juneteenth
Copy Text

Hi everyone,

June 19th is Juneteenth, which is the day the Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of the Civil War in 1865. Juneteenth celebrates the freeing of the enslaved and was first observed in 1866 as Jubilee Day by those emancipated in Texas to commemorate the anniversary of their freedom.

It’s important that we embrace this opportunity to bring awareness to the history behind this observance and reflect on the significance of this day.  Our priority is to create an inclusive and supportive environment to celebrate our diverse backgrounds while also bringing awareness to adversity past and present so we can work together to raise each other up.

There are things you can do daily to demonstrate your support and take a stance against racial injustice.

  • Speak up when you witness acts of discrimination, hate, or racism
  • Volunteer at organizations that defend civil rights or promote social action
  • Support Black-owned businesses
  • Encourage open dialogues about race with your friends and family
  • Diversify your media consumption to include Black voices

Let’s reflect today and reinforce our values to nurture a culture rich in diversity, appreciation, opportunity, and unity for all.

Thank you,

People Team

How to observe Juneteenth at the workplace

Juneteenth is celebrated as a federal holiday in Texas and in 43 other states.

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. This day is significant because it marks the end of slavery in the United States. It was the day the Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of the Civil War in 1865. Juneteenth was first observed in 1866 as Jubilee Day by those emancipated in Texas to commemorate the anniversary of their freedom.

Slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment, which was ratified on December 6, 1865. However, it took nearly two years for all of the states in the Union to ratify the amendment. There is still progress to be made today in terms of equality and equity. Juneteenth is an important day to reflect on our country's history and consider the many ways we can continue to make strides to close gaps and end racial injustice.

A few ways you can encourage your team to observe Juneteenth include:

  • Speak up when you witness acts of discrimination, hate, or racism
  • Volunteer at organizations that defend civil rights or promote social action
  • Support Black-owned businesses
  • Encourage open dialogues about race with your friends and family
  • Diversify your media consumption to include Black voices
